A Thermodynamical Model of the Icy Crust of Europa
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction. A fundamental question concerning Europa’s ice shell is whether the rigid lithosphere vis ible at the surface is underlain by a layer of warm, convecting ice. The heat produced by tidal friction in Europa’s silicate interior might be shed by simple conduction through a passive, relatively thin ice shell directly overlying a subsurface sea, or transported equally well through a much thicker ice shell consis ting of an actively convecting sublayer that efficiently delivers heat to a somewhat thinner upper conductive layer. While both of these configurations are plausible, they have very different implications for the thermal history of Europa, the formation of surface features and the prospects for future exploration.

Rayleigh-Benard convection flow with liquid/solid phase transition in a low gravity field
The presence of an icy crust covering several satellites of the solar system (e.g. Europa, the jovian satellite) suggested us to accomplish the numerical simulation of the Rayleigh-Benard convection flow of a horizontal layer of mushy water, covered at the top by its own ice and immersed in a low gravity field. The phase transition occurring at the ice/mushy water interface, with release/absorp...
متن کاملClathration as a Process for the Cryomagmatic Differentiation of Icy Satellites. Application to Enceladus and Europa
Introduction: Evidence of cryomagmatism has been detected in some icy satellites such as Europa and Enceladus. Examples of cryomagmatic structures on Europa are domes of various sizes, flat materials covering older features and low albedo deposits around fractures. In Enceladus, the features are less obvious because the composition of the magmatic materials and the surrounding surface seems to ...
متن کاملPolymerization of Building Blocks of Life on Europa and Other Icy Moons.
The outer Solar System may provide a potential habitat for extraterrestrial life. Remote sensing data from the Galileo spacecraft suggest that the jovian icy moons--Europa, Ganymede, and possibly Callisto--may harbor liquid water oceans underneath their icy crusts. Although compositional information required for the discussion of habitability is limited because of significantly restricted obser...
متن کاملEUROPA ’ S ICY CRUST AS A HABITAT AND REPOSITORY OF LIFE . Jere
Life, if it exists or existed on Europa, could be abundant and varied [1-3], as well as preservable in the surface ice. Europa's probable sub-ice ocean would provide a large number of habitats. By analogy with Earth's icy habitats, many ecologic settings are likely in and on the ice, as well as the on the ocean's floor and in the water column [4-8]. All of these could have been preserved in pla...
متن کاملEuropa’s Surface Properties from Small Craters
Introduction. Observations of Europa’s small craters (both primary and secondary), their morphologies, and their relationships with both the underlying and surrounding terrain provide information regarding the surfaceand near-surface properties of Europa’s icy crust. These observations reveal variations in strength between different terrain types, which may reflect variations in ice-structure a...
